33 years ago, we made our first batch of birch syrup in a small wood-fired pan on the front porch at our Kahiltna River homestead. Though it was strong and dark – and probably slightly burnt – we decided it was unusual and good. We got better at it and grew to love it. Feeling confident others would too, we turned this conviction into an art and a business that grew over the years, as people did indeed grow to love this versatile syrup and the wonderful products we make with it. We raised our family, grew a business, and treasured our life in the forest.
As of July 31st, we sold our business to Ted and Alex Hammers, and their partner Chris Sorensen, of Hammers Family Birch. These young men have the energy, enthusiasm, and vision – along with our support – to take Alaska Wild Harvest into the future with knowledge rooted in the past. Look for an introduction from the new owners soon!
This business is our life’s work and quite dear to us. As founders, our story is the back story and the foundation for the business. We will watch with interest as the new owners’ story unfolds and the business evolves.
